The New Zealand Manipulative Physiotherapists Association
Mission Statement:
The NZMPA will be the leading provider of manual therapy education and standard setting for New Zealand physiotherapists.
Role:
The NZMPA is a special interest group of the New Zealand Society of Physiotherapists.
Its role is to provide post-graduate education and standard setting in manipulative
physiotherapy.
History:
The NZMPA is a special interest group which was formed 25 years ago, by an enthusiastic
group of private physiotherapists, including the well-known names of Robin McKenzie
and Brian Mulligan. They realized that to upskill their colleagues, they had
to attend conferences and courses overseas, and then pass on the information.
Postgraduate courses began in 1975, leading to the qualification Diploma of
Manipulative Therapy, (Dip MT). There are now 300+ graduates and the qualification
is recognised worldwide.
Current Activities:
Today, the NZMPA offers a range of short courses both for newly qualified physiotherapists
and Dip MT graduates, or equivalent. This ensures an ongoing high standard of
knowledge amongst the practising profession. A wide range of techniques are
taught, drawn from all the worlds' leading manipulative specialists.
Skills:
Graduates are able to offer a high level of skill in the examination and assessment
of musculoskeletal problems, and the application of manual mobilising and manipulative
techniques. Their skills are keenly sought after by private practitioners, sports
clinics, and rehabilitation organisations.
International Federation of Manipulative
Therapists:
The NZMPA is a full member of the International body IFOMT - International Federation
of Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapists. IFOMTs' role is to act as a worldwide
standard setting and educational organisation, holding conferences and courses.
It aims to also assist in educating therapists throughout the third world.
How do you find a qualified manipulative
physiotherapist?
Call the NZMPA office for a list of therapists in your area, or look in the
telephone book under Physiotherapists with the following letters after their
name:
Dip MT, ADP, Post Graduate Diploma in Health Sciences (MT), DMPhty, MMPhty,
PGDipManPhty
When you require excellence in Manual and Manipulative Therapy treatment use a qualified Manipulative Physiotherapist.
Courses of Interest for Physiotherapists:
This year we have run four courses on the Cervical Spine and Upper Quartile
in Auckland, and three on the Lumbar Spine and Lower Quartile in Dunedin. They
are open to all registered physiotherapists with an interest in Manual Therapy
but may well be of greater interest to new graduates and present NZMPA members
who do not hold the Dip MP qualification but like to keep up with the latest
trends. Graduates are welcome, but we do run more advanced weekends specifically
for you. Each year the programme will swap over so that the whole country will
get adequate coverage over a 2 year cycle.
The content of the weekends will be integrated e.g material taught will cover clinically relevant areas. For example, the cervical spine will be covered in conjunction with the shoulder. There will be a significant amount of clinical reasoning in the weekends with relevant case histories as well as practical. The weekends will build on each other so that it is advisable to attend the series. The present Dip MP tutors are being utilised to ensure a continuity of teaching.
